Appropriate Use of Medication

The following figures regarding patient compliance are representative of the general population:

  • 14-21% of patients never fill their original prescriptions;
  • 60% cannot name all the medications they are taking;
  • 30-50% fail to follow the instructions for taking a medication;
  • 12-20% take medication prescribed for someone else.

(Wertheimer and Santella 2003)

The data would likely be worse for patients whose language and culture are different from those of their provider.
